What happens when drowning.

When drowning, the Instinctive Drowning Response (IDR) is initiated by the autonomic nervous system, causing airway obstruction, which prevents victims from breathing let alone calling for help. As an instinctive reaction, this is not consciously mediated nor under conscious control. The IDR will instinctively cause victims to extend their arms laterally with no leg kicks.

Drowning victims cannot wave, reach for life-saving devices, or move toward rescuers
